Couples Coping Enhancement Training (CCET):
A New Approach to Prevention of Marital Distress
Dr. Guy Bodenmann
The University of Louisville, Ekstrom Library, Chao Auditorium
June 20, 2013, 2:00-5:00 pm

The ways in which couples cope together with stress (dyadic coping) is an important predictor of relationship functioning, satisfaction, and stability. This workshop will present the Couples Coping Enhancement Training (CCET), an innovative program to prevent relationship distress by helping couples improve individual and dyadic coping skills. Dr. Bodenmann will introduce clinicians to the module that focuses on teaching couples about stress and dyadic coping and ways to create a synergy in their efforts, so each partner can deal with everyday stress more effectively.
Workshop Objectives:
1. Obtain knowledge about the systemic-transactional theory of stress and coping and its application to couple treatment;
2. Learn the 3-phase method of training couples to enhance the ability to communicate about their stress and respond to each other’s stress needs;
3. Learn the therapist’s role in facilitating positive coping skills with couples within a group context;
4. Apply the CCET interventions with a variety of couples such as couples at risk for divorce and couples with a partner who has depression or a chronic illness.
Dr. Guy Bodenmann is an international expert on couples, stress and coping. He is the director of the Clinical Training Program for Psychotherapy in Children/Adolescents and Couples/Families at the University of Zurich. He has been conducting research on dyadic coping and stress and has published numerous journal articles and books, including empirical studies on the efficacy of CCET. He will be one of the keynote speakers at the Couples Coping with Cancer-related Stress Conference that meets the following day on June 21, 2013.
